How did you overcome your loss?
“...it came to a point that I knew that I just had to keep going forward and I had to get on with my life and it was either a case of moving forward,”
How did it feel having your child taken into care?
“I sat outside the hospital for twenty four hours hoping to catch his parents walking in and out. But of course I wouldn’t know who they were”
Have you thought about your child since they went in to care?
“Just the wondering, the wondering if I’d passed him in the street, or, had he gone to the same school as my son? Or…Just not knowing.”
Did you always know you were adopted?
“they’d explain how I’d come to them and it was, like, a choice that they’d have me”
What are the brilliant things about adopting?
“Adoption is adoption and that child has the same status as a child who is born to you, birth parents can’t ask for them back and in just the same way, you have a right to get on with your own life, so yes you can have relationships, social services have”
“...we went through years of infertility treatment and… decided right early on that if things didn’t work out then we would try to adopt and decided to be placed on a waiting list”
Do you think adoption is a good thing?
“...adoption in the 21st century is very different and poses very different challenges to adoption 50 years ago”
Did you ever think of giving up?
“I had George Galloway on my back and all sorts of things and I thought, man having social workers, and IVF- which we had recently finished and George Galloway and so we did give up on adoption until well I lost the election ”
